How Long Does It Take for Improved Kienyeji Chicken to Start Laying Eggs?

In Kenya, there are different types of kienyeji chicken being reared. Each type’s growth rate, meat and egg production are different. Improved kienyeji chicken is an example of a chicken that grows faster and is good for eggs and white meat production.

It takes improved kienyeji an average of five months to begin laying eggs. The majority of improved kienyeji chickens begin laying eggs, depending on the breed. Each breed reaches maturity at a different time. For example, Kari, Kuroiler, and Rainbow Roosters begin laying eggs at five months of age, whereas the Sasso breed begins at 20 weeks of age.

The production of eggs on improved kienyeji chicken depends on the type of breed. The improved kienyeji chicken has different kinds of breeds, each producing different numbers of eggs in a year.

Various Types of Improved Kienyeji Chicken Breeds

The following are various breeds and how they produce eggs:

  1. Prenium Kienyeji Chicks: They are faster-growing chicks that lay around 250 to 270 eggs per year.
  2. Kuroiler: They lay between 200 and 220 eggs each year. Hens are mature for two years.
  3. Sasso: This breed starts to lay eggs in the 20th week and lays between 230 and 260 eggs per year.
  4. Kari: This type of improved chicken breed is productive for two years and produces between 220 and 280 eggs a year. On average, they have 25 to 30 eggs per month for each hen.
  5. Rainbow Rooster: This type of breed is often effective for two years, producing around 220 to 280 eggs each year.

6 Reasons Why Improved Kienyeji Chicken Breeds Don’t Hatch Their Eggs

Improved kienyeji chicken breeds don’t hatch their eggs to produce chicks. The following are six reasons why improved kienyeji chickens don’t hatch:

1.Sexually Inactive Males Chicken

When male chickens are thin and unable to function properly and consistently because they are not energetic enough, this will result in female hens laying infertile eggs.

2.Low Semen Quality

If the physical condition of the chicken is poor, especially when they are dull, ruffled feathers, dropped wings, and laying down, it will lead to poor semen quality. Inbreeding will also lower the quality of semen, resulting in the laying of infertile eggs.

3.Diseased Chicken

If the chicken has a disease, it will affect the reproductive systems of both male and female chickens, causing eggs to be infertile.

4.Overuse of Medications

Some vaccines, when a farmer continues to use them, will lower the fertility rate of chickens. For example, overuse of doxycycline affects the male chicken, lowering its fertility.

5. Embryo mortality

When the age of chickens is advanced, embryo mortality will be affected because male chickens may not be energetic enough to mate, causing female hens to lay infertile eggs.

Scheduled for Feeding Improved Kienyeji Chicken

Most improved kienyeji chicken farmers tend to cut down on the cost of feeding chickens to make money. They look for cheaper feeds that will lower the cost of production. There are many appropriate ways of feeding improved kienyeji chickens.

According to experts in chicken keeping, for farmers who want to use commercial feeds, the following are scheduled for feeding improved kienyeji chicken:

1. Chicks from day one to eight weeks old, feed them chick mash. On average, chicks will consume 60 grams of grain per day.

2. From 8 weeks to 19 weeks, feed them with growers’ mash. On average, they will consume 90 grams per day for each chick.

3. After they are 20 weeks old, feed them with layer mash.

Alternatively, as a farmer, other than using commercial feeds, you can choose to give them homemade feeds. Feeds like fish meal, maize, millet, sukuma wiki, and other vegetables when they are eight weeks old. It is also essential for improved kienyeji chicken to be provided with clean water daily.
